| We sail with Yves Parlier |
 |
Its not everyday that I get a phone call inviting
me to
sail with Yves Parlier on possibly the worlds most
revolutionary multihull.
When a phone call from Ocea , Yves Parlier's parent
organisation invited me to test this radical catamaran I
found myself a week later in the company of a very
special group of people - true pioneers of motion, just
as Archimedes more than 1800 years ago. With a
displacement of only 5 Tons and the most revolutionary
hull shapes in multihull history Yves Parliers new 60'
offshore racer shatters Archimeds' principles of
hydrodynamics in formidable fashion.

What are these ornate yet stylized metal sculptures on
the sides of a Fountaine Pajot ? They are clever yet
highly effective air intakes for the engines.
The matte chrome finish of these well designed alloy
castings not only serve as a model indicator, bearing
the vessels class name, but are vents for the twin
diesel powerplants.

| How to test a cat. |
 |
Everyone is talking about stiffness. Why is it so
important and how can we test for it?
Athwartship (side to side)
rigidity of
a multihull assures
good sailing characteristics as well as a long and safe
life for your multihull. Most of todays multihulls are built
out of composite sandwich. If there is softness the
entire structure of the vessel will flex and throughout
the life of the boat will undergo millions of these flex
cycles fatiguing the boat. Ultimately delamination and
in the worst cases serious structural damage can
occur, usually under the most inappropriate
circumstancs. At night, in storm conditions. This is the
reason we must assure that we have a stiff vessel.
How do we test for it? Its simple:
In fresh wind conditions take you cat upwind with as
much sail as you dare. Check the windward shroud. It
will be tight as a drum. On a 40' cat the load can be up
to 20,000 lbs or more. Now check the leeward shroud.
It should be almost as tight. If not, you know the
compression of the rig on the center beam in
combination with the pressure of the sails is bending
the cat athwartships like a banana, meaning the
structure is "soft".
This test is only relevant for non rotating rig
catamarans as the shrouds on vessels with articulating
masts have much less compression than on fixed rig
boats.
Another neat test is to rythmically pounce on one
of the bows and get a momentum going. If the boat is
soft the other bow will rythmically move in the
opposite direction.

As you are reading these lines, Gregor and Robin
are doublehanding WAY TO GO from Antigua to NY, non
stop.
The Outremer 45, which Aeroyacht took across the
Atlantic last November (Dec. Ocean Passages
Newsletter), placed 5th overall in the Rubicon Antigua
Transatlantic challenge, allthough she was forced to
start two days behind the leaders.
WAY TO GO will be stationed at Aeroyacht's docks in
Long Island NY. Interested parties can contact us to
arrange special demo sails

Hydraplaneur is by far the worlds most radical
catamaran
shattering Archimedes' principles of drag and speed.
She will take on the F1 tris in the upcoming STAR
singlehanded transatlantic race.
She is a machine, which operates best in the air-water
interface, easily reaching 37 knots in only 25 knots of
wind !
