Gerard Danson's legacy |
 |
Gerard Danson, creator and founder of the legendary shipyard Atelier
Outremer passed away in January at the young age of 57. He lost his
battle against cancer.
As a young man, Gerard started out as an artist in the streets of
Marseille, where he created paintings and sculpture reflecting daily
city life of a busy town at the edge of the Mediterranean. In 1972
adventure called and he set off in his own, home built plywood
sailboat and headed for the Pacific. Months later, horrendous
weather forced him to abandon ship and find himself shipwrecked on
the Island of Mauritius. Drawing from his experience he returned to
France and teamed up with naval architect Daniel Caillou to build
the very first Outremer catamaran. In 1984 he went out on his own
and founded the shipyard, Atelier Outremer, in the town of La Grande
Motte not expecting to build over 200 of these magnificent ocean
boats. Outremer catamarans have been known since then to be very
strong and reliable ocean crossers, which are appreciated by the
connoisseurs world wide. Ocean races, such as the Singlehanded
Transatlantic Race in 2000 and countless ARC's (Atlantic Rally for
Cruisiers) have been won by Outremer catamarans. Gerard will be
missed but his legacy will live forever.
