Yesterday morning a severe cold front hit hard on the Transat Jacques Vabre fleet of multi- and monohulls racing from Le Havre, France across the North Atlantic to Salvador de Bahia.

A series of incidents occurred throughout the day, which tested skippers and boats as weather conditions gradually deteriorated over the last days. Responsible for the survival like conditions was a low pressure system, which although not particularly intense, generated very big seas with pyramidal waves. Huge seas were whipped up by the rapid wind shift from the SW 35 – 45 knots to the NW 25 – 30 knots. It was this combination of weather, which brought about the kind of sea-state upon which Sodebo, Orange and Foncia, all fully reefed down sailing at less than 10 knots boat speed, suffered serious damages....

Gianna and Curtis are newcomers to the cruising catamaran world.
The Connecticut couple have been married for three years and adopted a lovely girl from the Hunan Province, China.
For many years, Curtis cruised the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, first on his parents' 50’ antique power boat , later on a 32’ Matthews and a 27’ Maxum. They now plan to enjoy the coastal waters of Long Island Sound and Rhode Island with their daughter. "You can’t beat the Lavezzi 40's safety, decent performance, and comfort" said Curtis. The couple has sailed small monohulls and Hobie cats in their younger years, so they will have a lot to learn. But in no time, Kate will be telling them what to do !
