Ocean Passages |
January 2008
|
Whats new:
Welcome to January! After weeks of family gatherings, too much
good food and the occasional frostbite sail we are reporting
back by recognizing a multihull legend, as well as confessing of
being infatuated with the coolest game since Space Invaders.
Also read about our winter trial with the Blubay TC45 power cat
who is fast getting into race mode.
Enjoy this current edition of
OCEAN PASSAGES, our newsletter.

Living Legends - Who is this man?
|
|
Hints: |
|
- last seen at major US boat show
- usually surrounded by fans
- also known as "the King"
- cannot ride a horse

You might not be reading these lines without his efforts! Who is
the person mostly responsible for the recognition and
development of modern cruising multihulls? Well, at least to us
it is none other than the man on the left. He single-handed the
catamaran movement in the 50's and 60's, as well as rubbed
shoulders with well known multihull pioneers and designers,
orchestrated the first symposiums and was the all-important
instigator for various "multihull lagoons" at US boat shows.
This month's mystery man is one of the very few experts who will
give you a completely unbiased view of multihulls (we honestly
try, but do not always succeed) and point out the often
overlooked basics.
Answer of his name, including his phone number will be in the
next issue of OCEAN PASSAGES and yes, we are bracing ourselves
for another onslaught of the craziest answers...

TC45 - lift off
|
|
Check out these sweet rooster tails! On last weeks trial run
with our friend's 45' Blubay Tender Cat, the spray was seriously
flying. Honoring tradition it was another cold temperature,
winter test - luckily not as arctic as the last one in NYC's
frigid Hudson river.
Slowly engaging the twin 440HP Yanmars which drive new Seafury
surface piercing props, the boat immediately jumped up on a
power-plane, kicking up a 50' long and 20' high rooster tail.
Amazingly the wake this top end, super efficient boat kicked up
at high speed was less than 18 inches (yes inches) The Blubay
TC45' is an advanced foil assisted power catamaran which rides
on 3 specially designed planing surfaces to reduce displacement
and drag. Stay tuned for further adventures

Virtual Skipper
|
|
...is the name of the world's hottest sailing game. Amazing
graphics and an intelligent user interface make this game the
must have for any boater. Players can chose their boats (yes
also 60' trimarans), select opponents (Chinese are the whimps)
and pick their favorite sailing venue. From San Francisco Bay,
Marseilles and UK's famous Needles; its all there. Pre- start
sequences and fake tacks, just like the big boys play. Best is -
you can finally race as couchpotato with your cat on your lap
while snow is gathering on your multi.
PS: Help!
If anyone of our readers knows a better interactive sailing
simulator - share it with us. I desperately need a new sailing
game to lure the kids away from Virtual Skipper- so I can
finally play again.
