"Spider" in Surfer Heaven
|
|
Woody "Spider" Brown |
|
Multihull Pioneer, Expert Surfer
Inventor of the modern Cruising Cat
1912 - 2008
|
|
|
Woody Brown died in April at the age of 96. He came from a
well-to-do New York City family yet was a bit different then
expected. An early pioneer of aviation/glider records he soon made
his way to Hawaii where he challenged the big surf of Waikiki.
Inspired by early Polynesian twin-hulled sailing canoes, Woody
built the fist ocean-going catamaran - the Manu Kai 38. He did not
patent the design - but his friend and crew member did: no other
than Hobie Alter and the rest is history. We will miss you
Woody and hope you find the big surf in heaven!

Jim Brown's famous Scrimshaw 31' tri - for sale
Chosen by the editors of SAIL Magazine as one of the 100 greatest
sailing yachts in North America J im Brown tells us: "Those years
were probably the most challenging, yet fun and fulfilling, years
of our lives. We sold or gave away everything we had that did not
belong on the boat. We had little idea of where we were going but
had no intention of returning to California"
"By 1970 we had the hulls complete and the main hull's interior
roughed-in. With the help of friends we were able to move the
hulls to Santa Cruz for assembly near a launching ramp. Moved in
pieces, this was perhaps the most hazardous voyage she has ever
made. Completion took nearly a year of almost full-time work, but
we finally had a great launching with friends"
