Mini Cruise - 4/7 Day Sample Itinerary

Long Island Sound sunset

Day 1: Port Jefferson to the Thimble Islands. 3-5 hours.  Leaving the bustling Port Jefferson harbor in your wake take an easy cruise NE towards the tranquil Thimble Islands. Search for the traces of the notorious Captain Blackbeard, who once took refuge there. Anchor in the shelter of Wheaton Reef and enjoy a relaxed swim and a sunset barbeque. You can even take your dinghy to shore to explore some of the picturesque Cape Cod style waterfront homes.

Thimble Islands

Day 2-3: Thimble Islands to Essex. 2-6 hours Sail past Falkner Island towards the entrance of the historic Connecticut River estuary. You will reach the charming village of Essex by traveling past wildlife preserves and picturesque dunes. You can either stroll the busy streets of downtown Essex or explore the secret of Connecticut: Hamburg Cove, which is considered the most scenic of all hurricane holes on the East Coast. Next day the famous Goodspeed "Opera House" in East Haddam can be visited before making your way back to Long Island Sound. Make sure you get lost for a swim in one of the many meandering river estuaries and watch rare birds nesting in the adjaicent dunes.

Essex historic village

Day 3-4: Essex to Shelter Island, 2-6 hours After exiting by the famous lighthouse marking the entrance to the Connecticut river, sail across the Sound past "Plum Gut" into Gardiners Bay. Enjoy the hospitality of the charming stores on Shelter Island and take in a delicious dinner at the Rams Head Inn. Next day you can either circumnavigate Shelter Island, stroll through the wildlife preserve on the S. tip of the Island or even sail towards Block Island.

Day 4-5: Block Island to Port Jefferson: 8-14 hours Block Island is also called "The Bahamas of New York" . Renting a bike is a must. Take the entire family on an island exploration, cycling through dunes, winding roads, past historic lighthouses and charming little villages. The fact that there are very few cars allowed on the Island, will make this a unique experience. Pack your own lunch and enjoy an outdoor picnic before going to one of the famous beaches for a cool dip. In the evening visit the notorious "watering holes" frequented by the whalers and sailors of the 19th Century. Next day on the way back to Port Jefferson you can visit Shelter Island's Cookles Harbor or make your way through the infamous "Race" back to Port Jeff.
