The only downside of this amazing sailing simulation is that it is not a multihull racing game. The Volvo Ocean Race Game lets you skipper your own yacht around the world. It uses real time weather data and forecasts and you make the decisions whether to jibe or tack – and even which sails to use. The best is that you can play against 150,000 other gamers around the world and track your friends. The real fleet of Volvo Ocean Racers is of course also viewable. But while they are battling it out in the freezing Southern Ocean we can sail from the comfort of our armchair. Look out for our own boat named “Aeroyacht” and send us a message. The race is on !

The ULTRA CXX is 36m in length and features an innovative system reducing the total width allowing access in marinas like a normal monohull. The catch eye exterior styling is in accordance with the high level of performance, while the interior architecture enhances the huge volume with modern and elegant materials. The large multi-hull yacht is envisioned to accommodate six guests in a master stateroom and two guest suites all being ensuite.

By Charles K. Chiodi*

The recent death of Steve Jobs and the celebration of his life and accomplishments, especially in personal computers, reminded me of the parallel I used to draw between the Macintosh and Multihulls.

Steve Jobs was a visionary who worked outside of the box, contrary to all established practices. He ditched the ideas of Tandy, Atari, IBM et al, and invented a totally new and different theory of what a personal computer should be.

In the 1960s Arthur Piver also worked outside of the box when he introduced the modern multihull and kept promoting the idea of an unconventional sailboat. Unlike the age-old and well-proven monohulls, he drew plans for a totally different sailing craft, and soon had enthusiastic followers in Norman Cross, Ed Horstman, Jim Brown, and others – just like in the 1980s – and only a few miles away – Jobs had Steve Wozniak, Jeff Raskin and John Scully, people who believed in him.

The first Macintosh, a square box with only 128 kb of memory was flawed, and a far cry from today’s super iMacs. Similarly, Piver’s first trimarans were slow and awkward to tack as compared to today’s super-yachts and million-dollar catamarans. Unfortunately, Piver was lost at sea and would never see how far his efforts developed into a multi-billion dollar industry all over the world. Fortunately, Jobs was afforded the privilege of seeing his efforts grow and develop at lightning speed – worldwide.

There is one more comparison I have to mention that boggles my mind. With all those successful innovations Jobs brought into our computer technology, why are we still stuck in the archaic ways a PC operates? And, similarly, with all the speed, comfort and safety multihulls offer, why is it that monohulls still outnumber catamarans 25:1? Are sailors so brainwashed by the sinkable, heeling, uncomfortable keelboat mentality that they can’t see the advantages of multihulls? Maybe it is the same ideology that drives the people who buy PCs that crash and burn… or attract all kinds of viruses – none of which affect the Macs.

* Charles Chiodi offers his 45+ years of multihull knowledge and experience for consultation to anyone who wants to buy, or to upgrade, a catamaran or trimaran.

Good News for Outremer owners around the world. SAIL Magazine just announced that our Outremer 49 catamaran which we showed at the Annapolis Boat Show won SAIL Magazine’s Best Boats Award for best deck and cockpit. Much praise to the Outremer’s naval architect Christophe Barreau and interior designer Frank Darnet who created the industrie’s best floor plan on any multihull. Another milestone in Outremer Yachting’s illustrious history of over 260 crusing catamarans built in a span of 29 years.

Here are the key points identified by the SAIL magazine editor Charles Doane after the sea trial during several days:

The deck layout:”After a few hundred miles sailing this boat we found nothing about its deck layout we wanted to change”, “One or two crew can manage the boat easily ”

Tillers: “Our favorite features were the three different stations – tillers outboard on each hull (each with a comfy steering seat), plus a conventional bulkhead-mounted wheel” “It truly is an ideal arrangement”.

Welcome to Sunreef Yacht’s first rocket ship. The Sunreef 75 Ultimate project was launched only few months ago and construction of this superyacht is only few steps away. The Sunreef 75 Ultimate carbon fibre yacht has thin and sleek marine hulls with a reversed bow and integrated stepped hull chins, essential for the yacht’s high performance. The mast will be moved back to the centre of the boat helping to achieve the optimal balance, thus creating the ultimate navigation comfort. The sail plan is calculated to reach top speeds of 20+ knots. As for the propulsion system, Sunreef’s engineering office is currently working on hybrid and further electric propulsion for this and other units.
