Thanks to Porsche and Co I had the privilege to drive a Porsche 918 Spyder in the 2016 One Lap America. A Tire Rack sponsored charity event it is considered a hardcore transcontinental dash stopping at new racetracks for time trials. Anything from a beat up Police Interceptor Crown Vic to an Ariel Atom sans roof – anything goes. Driving through America in this car with a friend and racing at great road courses is a vacation of the mind.
The Cannonbal as it’s known as the true drivers endurance event the adventurous OLA is a 3500 miles 7 day race – in our super car. Like sailing – fatigue, mental and car management all comes together. The 918 Spyder is as close as I have driven heaven. It has everything a car should reflect actively and emotionally, including 1000’s of spectators attached like pilot fish in and out of traffic – a fantastic event really. Like the Targa Newfoundland a must do event for the enthusiast.
It was nice to see familiar faces from last event (we drove with the Carrera GT, really...) but also hard to say goodbye to the best ride of my life. This is the halo car of Porsches and to pilot it was often hypnotic.
