42′ OUTREMER catamaran

Outremer goes Green! Atelier Outremer has recently launched an “Electric-Drive Outremer”.  The catamaran is equipped with 13kw Fisher Panda gensets and electric motors powering sail drives in each hull. One genset can also run both electric motors in case of a problem or to save fuel. Top speed has been recorded at a respectable 9.5 knots, which is about the same as a boat equipped with twin diesels. We have seen gains of about 30% more fuel efficiency since the gensets run at a steady 3000 rpm. They are also virtually silent, are easy to maneuver via twin joysticks and provide instant torque. There are no storage batteries as they would ad weight -contradicting Outremers’ approach to a light and fast boat.
